When would I need an injection?

Injections can reduce inflammation, improve movement in a joint, and ease the pain caused by many conditions, including:

What type of injection might I receive?

Steroid injections

Steroids are powerful anti-inflammatory medications often used to relieve pain in the shoulder, hip, ankle, elbow, and knee. Though steroids take a few days to reduce the inflammation enough for you to get relief from the pain, they produce long-lasting results for most people.

Viscosupplementation

Viscosupplementation refers to an injection of hyaluronic acid that’s used to treat arthritis. Hyaluronic acid is normally produced in your joints, where it lubricates the joint and promotes smooth movement.

When your provider injects hyaluronic acid, it reduces inflammation, relieves stiffness, and eases your pain. It takes a few weeks to feel the difference. Once your results kick in, they should last 2-6 months.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

PRP contains a large number of platelets in a small amount of blood plasma. After injecting PRP near damaged or inflamed tissues, the platelets trigger a healing response, reduce inflammation, and recruit stem cells to the area to rebuild damaged tissues.

Trigger point injections

A trigger point is a hard, painful knot that develops in your muscles and fascia, the connective tissues that wrap around your muscles and organs. Trigger point injections contain a local anesthetic, steroid, or both. 

After your provider injects the medications into the trigger point, the knot relaxes, inflammation goes down, and the pain improves.

What is an epidural injection?

Epidural injections are a type of interventional procedure that relieves chronic back, neck, arm, and leg pain caused by inflamed spinal nerves. The injection contains steroids that your Pro Sports and Elite Rehab provider releases into the epidural space around your spine. 

As the medication goes through the epidural space, it flows around the nerves and reduces the inflammation.
